Why keep a list?

For starters, I like knowing what I own. I enjoy that general sense of awareness of my possessions. But there’s more to it than that. My general reasons for this project:

• It forces me to reflect on why I own what I own.
• To reduce mental/physical clutter.
• I enjoy being aware of all my tangible possessions.
• I want to be intentional about what I own.
• Less possessions generally means less maintenance costs.
• I enjoy being as “light” and mobile as possible.
• Keeping the list small forces me to eliminate the unimportant and be smart about what I buy.
• The more I own, the more complex my organizational system must be.
• Keeping track of possessions can be a source of anxiety or stress; less things will hopefully reduce this.
• I want to build a better appreciation of the things I do have.
• (Note: the goal is not to eliminate my useful and valuable possessions.)

The Rules

• Regular disposable/consumable items don’t count. Toilet paper, food, etc.
• Shared items don’t count. Utensils, pots & pans, furniture, broom—unless they are explicitly mine, i.e., I would definitely take them with me if I moved.
• Temporarily borrowed items don’t count.
• Items in storage don’t count.
• “Grouped” items count as one. A pair or socks, a med kit with various items, and my five bags of extra climbing chalk each count as one item.
• Books don’t count.

Other Notes

• I’m not counting items in storage, though I should still note that I have very few things in storage, and aim to keep it that way.
• While maintaining this list, I also maintain an Evernote notebook with important information for certain items, such as the size of my climbing shoes, the serial number of my headphones, and receipts for expensive items.
